Flame Keepers teachers’ pack is free to download
Five classroom activities for Key Stage 2, built from the interviews, photographs and newspaper reports.

A free teachers’ resource pack from Flame Keepers is now available, so Island schools can teach the story of the Ronson factory in Newport through the voices of the people who worked there.
The pack is written for Years 5 and 6, and all but one of the activities have notes for adapting them to Years 3 and 4. It asks pupils a big question: why was the factory so successful, and why did it close?
What’s inside
- A five-session plan with learning objectives and quick checks
- Background notes, a timeline and a map
- A vocabulary sheet of factory terms, from float girl to piecework
- Ten historic photographs and documents, each with questions
- Five activities with printable sheets, including a production line challenge and a look at why the factory closed
It supports a local history study and links to English, maths, geography and PSHE. The pack was reviewed by Creative Island Education.
Free to use
Like the interviews, the pack is licensed CC BY-NC-ND 4.0. Teachers can print, copy and share it for non-commercial teaching, with credit.
