About us
About Discover More
We uncover, record and look after the heritage stories of the Isle of Wight and the Solent that would otherwise go untold.
Discover More CIC is a community interest company. We work with local people to gather the voices and experiences history has overlooked, to save photograph collections that might otherwise be lost, and to make local history something everyone can reach. We share what we find through digital media, exhibitions, public artworks and resources for schools.
How we work
- In people’s own words. We record long oral history interviews with the people who were there, and credit everyone who takes part or lends a photograph by name.
- Free to hear and share. Flame Keepers’ interviews and teaching resources are published under a Creative Commons licence (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0), so schools, libraries and families can use them.
- Not just online. We take our projects to people who don’t use the internet, through public libraries and Talking News for people with sight loss.
- Kept for good. Flame Keepers’ recordings are preserved on the Internet Archive and have a permanent home at Carisbrooke Castle Museum, so they outlast any one website.
Why the asterisk?
An asterisk is a footnote marker. It says there is more to this than the headline. That is the job we set ourselves, so our logo carries one, and every Discover More project carries one too. Read more about our new look.
Our first project
Flame Keepers recorded the people who built Ronson lighters on Forest Road, Newport, between 1961 and 1984: five in-depth interviews, more than 200 photographs and a free teachers’ pack.
Before Discover More
Members of our team have been recording oral histories since 2013, before the company was formed: Yarmouth and Thorley Voices in the West Wight, Farming Memories and Memories of the Sea with Islanders who worked the land and the sea, Submariners’ Stories in Gosport and Packs’ People in Ryde.
